Principles of Interpretation

Scripture interprets Scripture

In interpreting, we do use Language and Logic – and these have to be precise and sound. But the only empirical test of the validity of any doctrine is whether it is in accordance with all of Scriptures. If a doctrine stands in direct contradiction with any single portion of the Bible, then it must be immediately rejected as False.

Scripture is sufficient

The Scriptures are not only inerrant, they’re also completely sufficient. If God has commanded us to live in unity within the One Body, then it necessarily entails that God has also provided sufficient revelation in His written Word as means for us to be able to do so. While it is true that we only know in part here and will have complete revelation only in the resurrection, God has provided us with enough in the Bible to be reconciled with one another theologically.

All Glory to God

When in doubt between two or more interpretations, the one which more glorifies God must be adopted.

Tradition respected but not absolute

What has been passed on to us as Christian legacy is quite important – what our church forefathers believed holds credence. But it is not infallible. One’s offering a different interpretation must not be rejected solely on the grounds of it not having precedent authority, though it must be considered and put through scrutiny.
